Worksop: College through to next round of UK’s oldest debating competition

Six schools took part in the competition and battled it out in the first round of the English Speaking Union’s Mace.

Hosts, Worksop College wowed the judges and made it through to the next round of the heats.

In the debating competition, two pupils took part and debated on the merits of 100% inheritance tax.

The pupils had to prepare their speeches beforehand and then take questions from the floor.

On the night, the event was watched by both teachers and pupils.

Gail Robson-Bayley, English teacher at Worksop College said: “The Schools’ Mace is a prestigious event, which has been running since 1957.”

“It was an extremely enjoyable event which we were very pleased to host.”

“ I am very proud that the College is through to the next heat.”

“ It is a fantastic experience for all of the pupils.”

The second round of the heats will take place in next year.

Students who participate in the competition can develop their knowledge of controversial issues and world affairs, while enhancing their speech writing, public speaking and analytical thinking skills.

Previous winners of the debating competition have gone on to become MPs, journalists and scientists.
