Proposals to take action have been enforced after Bassetlaw Council received ‘numerous’ complaints since last September, relating to gangs of youths ‘intimidating, harrassing and being verbally abusive’ to passers-by in the shopping precinct.

The council are now undertaking a consultation into introducing a Public Space Protection Order, which would prohibit youths under the age of 16 from congregating, drinking alcohol or harrassing people at the location.

Breach of the order is a criminal offence and following a conviction Magistrates would have the power to order offenders to pay a fine of up to £1000.

Stella Fitzgerald, Bassetlaw District Council’s principal solicitor for licensing and segulatory matters said:“The introduction of Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, 2014 streamlined the tools which the Council has available to them to tackle anti-social behaviour.”

“The new power of a Public Space Protection Orders gives the council the power to target areas where anti-social behaviours is an issue by targeting groups and individuals and controlling the anti-social activities which they are engaging in.”

“By working with both the local community and the police we are putting measures in place that will allow action to be taken against those causing nuisance and distress to others and allow local residents to live peacefully without threat of harrassment, alarm or distress.”
