Simon Greaves has written to Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, stressing that delays could jeopardise the project.

The council received a letter from the Planning Inspectorate saying that a decision would be made on or before 1st May, following last week’s planning inquiry.

Coun Greaves wrote in his letter: “As leader of the council, I cannot stress strongly enough just how important this major regeneration project is to the local community, both in terms of investment and job creation.”

“The associated benefits to the local economy are significant and I am extremely concerned that any delays in determining this appeal could jeopardise a once in a generation opportunity that enjoys the universal support of the community.”

He added that all planning policy issues relating to this site have now been addressed and that there ‘is nothing preventing a positive determination being issued.’
