Henry Baker, of West Grove Road, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 19th February.

Prosecuting, Donna Fawcett told the court how Baker had been grocery shopping at a supermarket in Worksop at the time of the incident.

Despite having £30 in his wallet to pay for items, he ‘hadn’t been thinking clearly that day’ and grabbed a block of cheddar off a shelf before shoving it down the front of his trousers in ‘a moment of madness’.

A staff member spotted this and confronted Baker at the door of the shop- he was later arrested.

Defence solicitor David Verity told the court that the man was having a hard time and ‘didn’t know what he was doing’ when he decided to steal the cheese.

Said Mr Verity: “The defendant has recently been bereaved and was in a daze at the time of the incident.”

“ He knew what he was doing was wrong and admitted to the theft straight away when questioned by police.”

Magistrates imposed a conditional discharge of six months.

Baker was also ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
