Worksop: Detectives say one punch dad assault was ‘cowardly’ and ‘horrendous’

Unemployed Steven Paul Hancock, 23, formerly of Yeoman Close, Worksop, was jailed for two years on Friday after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm at a previous hearing on Friday, September 11. He also admitted a charge of criminal damage and being found in possession of party drug MCAT.

Hancock, who the court heard had 17 previous convictions for 38 different offences, punched victim Daniel Cutts, of Worksop, on a night out on Gateford Road, Worksop, in the early hours of Saturday, June 20 after a heavy night of drinking lager and vodka.

Worksop Timber employee Mr Cutts suffered a double haematoma, was placed in a medically-induced coma for more than two months and suffered an 11cm fracture to his head. The 31-year-old needed two operations, which included having a part of his skull removed and he now has to wear a safety helmet in public. He also has difficulties with his speech and is at risk of suffering from seizures.

Detective Constable Jann Olsen, who led the investigation, said: “This was a cowardly and horrendous attack that has left the victim with awful injuries. We hope that he can make a full recovery.”

“The severity of the sentence shows just how serious a crime this is and I am pleased Hancock will be serving time in prison.”

Detective Inspector Dave Bola, from the county violence team, said: “This case is a timely reminder how ill-considered actions on a night out on the town can ruin lives.

“Combine alcohol with a bit of bravado and all sense and judgement can be lost. The ‘wrong’ look or word can quickly become more and a shove or single punch could be enough to see you responsible for a serious injury or death.

“We now have dedicated violent crime teams to help solve serious assaults like this in Nottinghamshire.”
