Worksop digs deep into mining history

WORKSOP’S rich mining heritage was celebrated in a special event at the town hall recently.

The Nottingham Association of Ex and Retired Miners hosted an exhibition Ceres Suite.

The exhibition featured tools and items used in coal mining throughout the ages, as well as first hand anecdotes and experiences from former miners about life down the pit.

Visitors were also treated to a number of films about coal mining.

Coun David Pressley, portfolio holder for community prosperity at Bassetlaw Council, said the event had been a huge success.

“Mining is a big part of the area’s history,” he said. “The area was built on coal, so it is important to remember our mining heritage.”

Visitors of all ages went along to learn more about what it was like to work in one of the area’s coal mines.

“We have a book full of names of people who came along and said what a good day it was.”

“There were lots of exhibits and people there to explain how the equipment all worked.”

People also had the chance to ask questions and see demonstrations. As well as recent equipment there was also some really old pieces on display so people got a good idea of what life was like down the pit many years ago.”
