Luke Anthony Wilson, 27, of Dryden Dale, attacked the pair as they walked home.

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told how the couple had enjoyed a drink in Worksop town centre on the evening of October 31 and were making their way home when they spotted a group of people arguing near a sports shop on Bridge Place.

The couple said they were concerned and asked the group to calm down.

It was at this point that Wilson walked up to the man and punched him in the face sending him to the floor.

When he stood up, Wilson threw another punch which floored the man again.

Wilson said it was nothing to do with the couple, and when the man’s partner tried to intervene, Wilson hit her in the face.

Under interview, Wilson said he could not remember what had happened because he had been drinking with friends, downing seven pints of lager.

However, he accepted responsibility for his actions.

Wilson admitted two counts of common assault.

Mitigating, David Verity said Wilson had shown ‘genuine remorse’ and was ‘ashamed’ of his behaviour.

He added: “In the last few years he has sorted his life out, lives in Worksop with his partner and is in full-time work.”

He was given a 12-week jail term, suspended for 12 months, was made to pay £150 compensation to the man,£100 to the woman, and pay out £315 in costs.
