Worksop: Entrepreneur’s ‘exciting’ move to Welbeck

A Gateford entrepreneur says it is ‘exciting’ to be surrounded by top local businesses after moving next to the School of Artisan Food at Welbeck.

Karkli, a homemade Indian snack, was launched 18-months ago by former dentist Kumar Kolar.

“It is really exciting to be surrounded by quality businesses at Welbeck,” Kumar said.

“The energy for business in the local area is very strong.”

The crunchy treat is made of lentils, rice and chickpeas mixed with spices including coriander, cumin, pepper and turmeric. The dough is then kneaded and extruded before being cooked to give the distinctive shape.

Karkli is vegan friendly and gluten free and has proved to be popular at food festivals and real ale pubs including the Sheffield Tap.

Kumar has also now teamed-up with the award-winning Grafton Hotel where the popular treats will be on sale.

Susan Hale, of Grafton Hotel and Grafton Brewing company, said: “It is really exciting.”

“We decided to get together to support each other.”

“It is great that it is gluten free especially as people are more conscious about what they put in their bodies.”

“It just goes to show that there are good businesses in the area.”

Karkli recently won the Successful New Business Award at the annual North Notts Business Awards at Worksop College.

On collecting the top accolade, Kumar said: “I was not expecting at all, it was a good event.”
