The safe, at the delivery office on Ryton Street, holds special delivery items, which postmen have previously tried to deliver.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: “I went on Saturday and queued up for quite a while, only to be told they couldn’t get into the safe.”

“I was given a number to ring to check back, but they are too busy to answer it.”

“It’s not repaired yet - I rang again this morning (Monday).”

“There are alot of people who will have Christmas presents in there.”

Royal Mail spokesperson, Morag Turnbull, apologised to customers.

She said: “Due to a fault with the lock, we have been unable to access the safe at Worksop Delivery Office which holds special delivery items we have previously tried to deliver.”

“Royal Mail apologises to customers for any inconvenience caused, our engineers are currently working hard to open the safe and we will be redelivering these items as soon as possible.”
