Worksop: Johnsons Cleaners shuts in the town

A Worksop branch of a well-known dry cleaning chain has now closed down.

Johnsons Cleaners, Bridge Place, shut on Thursday 12th March.

The company announced plans to close a third of its 307 high street stores earlier this year after previously shutting more than 100 branches in 2012.

The exact number of job losses at the branch, if any, is not yet known.

Customers of the service received a letter which said: “I regret to inform that our branch at 35 Bridge Place will be closing on Thursday 12th March. “

“However you can continue to use our first class cleaning services at Johnsons Cleaners, Lords Mill Gate, Lords Mill Street, Chesterfield.”

A message on the Worksop branch website told users to collect their items before Thursday last week or from the Chesterfield store.

Dennis Learad, of Doles Lane, Whitwell, who was a regular customer, said: “I was absolutely shocked.”

“For what they charge I thought it was very reasonable.”

“It is a shame that another local business has closed.”

“It always looked busy.”

“I will probably go to Crystal Peaks now for mine.”

The move to more ‘convenient’ locations appears to be another sign that town high streets are no longer as popular as they once were.

A spokesman for Johnsons Cleaners said: “The remaining 198 better-performing premium branches are in more convenient locations with an infrastructure capable of receiving dry cleaning from various collection and delivery points.”

Johnsons specialises in dry cleaning, alterations and repairs, laundry and ironing and home textiles.
