Worksop: Larwood GP awarded OBE in Queen’s birthday honours

Dr Steve Kell, chair of NHS Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group, has been awarded an OBE for services to Primary Care in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Dr Kell has been a local GP based at Larwood Surgery in Worksop since 2002 and he is also the vice chair of Notts Health and Wealth Being Board.

An Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) is awarded for having a major local role in any activity, including people whose work has made them known nationally in their chosen area.

The list was announced on Saturday 14th June.

He said: “I am honoured to have been nominated for this award.”

“I am passionate about general practice and improving local services for patients with my colleagues in the CCG.”

“I received a letter about five weeks ago through the post, it was a nice surprise but I do not know who nominated me.”

“Within the next seven months I will head down to Buckingham Palace, I have never been there before.”

“My family were as surprised as I was but they are delighted.”

As chair of NHS Bassetlaw CCG, Dr Kell’s responsibilities include helping to improve local patients services and respresenting NHS across the country.

“It has been a real team effort. Everybody can take credit for this award.”

“I look forward to continuing to work with others to ensure we deliver for patients.”

Dr Michael Dixon, President of NHSCC, congratulated him on his honour.

He said: “I am delighted for Steve. It is significant that this is the first time commissioners have been specifically recognised in the honours list.”

“It is an exciting and challenging time for clinically led commissioning and CCGs are now taking centre stage and are key to service improvement.”

“That its role in driving forward change and success in delivering better health outcomes for patients has been recognised is an important and timely step forward‎.”
