Worksop: Man banned from owning a dog after leaving pets without food and water

A Worksop man left his two dogs without food and water as they roamed around in his back garden in their own excrement, a court heard.

Darrel Sanaghan, 34, of Lincoln Street, Worksop, failed to provide a suitable environment for his brindle male Mastiff and tan female Mastiff.

He pleaded guilty at Worksop Magistrates’ Court to four charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The court heard how when RSPCA inspectors attended his previous address, on South Avenue, on 9th February, they found both dogs under weight and were suffering from Dermatitis.

One of the dogs also had an eye infection and both had sore feet.

Inspectors said that when they looked inside the dog kennel, there was water in the dog bowl but that was from rain that had come through the damaged roof.

They were immediately taken away to a local veterinary surgery to be looked after and the dogs have since been signed over by Sanaghan.

A report from one of the RSPCA inspectors said: “In my opinion there was a lack of a clean and healthy living environment. The area was poorly maintained for which to look after two adult dogs. The likely cause of the Dermatitis is from them walking in their own feces.”

In mitigation, David Verity said that Sanaghan had been having a lot of difficulties in his private life at the time including his children going into hospital.

Verity said: “My client is very upset and remorseful. He is a man who has looked after his dogs previously. He regrets the situation.”

Sanaghan, who is now living with his mother, was banned from owning a dog for five years, which means he cannot keep or participate in the caring of a dog.

He was also given a 12-month community order, instructed to complete 120 hours unpaid work, ordered to pay £500 contribution costs to the RSPCA and £60 victim surcharge.
