Worksop: M&S choose Bassetlaw Hospital as their charity of the year

The Worksop branch of high street giant Marks and Spencer has chosen Bassetlaw Hospital as their local charity of the year.

This year, staff at M&S voted to raise funds to create a dementia friendly area on Ward B5 of Bassetlaw Hospital.

Fundraising activities will take place over the year to support some simple changes to improve the experience for patients.

These will include introducing a ‘This is me’ booklet that will give families an opportunity to communicate to staff additional information about the patient, oversize clocks on the ward to display the day and date and televisions with DVD facilities so that patients can enjoy films and music from their era.

Helen Davies, ward manager of B5, said: “We recognise that coming into hospital can be a frightening time for patients, especially for those with dementia as they are away from their usual environment and this can make them feel very disorientated.”

“We are committed to creating a safe dementia area which will have homely comforts to improve the care and well-being of our patients.”

Sally Richardson, Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals fundraiser, said: “It’s wonderful news that M&S have chosen us as their charity of the year – we are extremely grateful. With their help I am sure we shall achieve our aim to create a dementia friendly area for our patients.”

The fundraising campaign got off to a great start with a donation of £50 from M&S Section store manager, Robert Hard, who donated his winnings from the Grand National.
