Residents were saddened when Edwards Emporium suddenly shut down in January 2015 after its owner, David Edwards, announced his illness had forced him to cease trading.

Renowned for its quirkiness, the small Bridge Street shop supplied a wide variety of weets and chocolate, including old school favourites in glass jars as well as more exotic confectionary ordered in over from overseas.

And now popular retailer David is set to make a comeback in Worksop after undergoing open heart surgery which he says has made him well enough to trade again.

David, who will be re-opening Edwards Emporium at Carlton Arts and Vintage Centre on Carlton Road next month, told the Guardian: “I am on the mend and really looking forward to seeing my customers in Worksop again, who were always so supportive and kind to me.

“I was devastated when I was forced to close the shop after being given a 50 per cent chance of living for more than two years by doctors. It was such a horrible time.

“Luckily I had successful surgery and afterwards I tried to get back into full-time employment again- there’s only so much daytime TV you can stand. But I had difficulties as I can no longer drive or lift heavy items due to my condition.

To cheer him up one day last year, David’s friend took him out for a coffee in Worksop at the Carlton Arts and Vintage Centre, and it was there he had the idea of re-opening his shop.

“The building was beautiful and I fell in love with it straight away,” David added.

“It was the perfect place to bring Edwards Emporium back to, and I almost feel like all this was meant to be.”

“The sweet shop made me so happy. I didn’t earn a fortune running it- but I never wanted to.

“I can’t wait to get the business started again, and I look forward to welcoming back previous customers along with lots of new faces.”

Edwards Emporium is set to open on Monday, February 1 at the Carlton Arts, Vintage and Craft Centre based on 36-38 Carlton Road.
