Worksop: New homes plan on Sparken Hill sparks fury

Barratt Homes North Midlands are proposing to build 90 dwellings on land at the old Portland School.

A petition was issued to Bassetlaw District Council back in 2011 and was signed by 35 residents - including 20 on Sparken Hill - and they plan on getting Bassetlaw MP John Mann involved.

In a letter to the Guardian, Jonathan and Katie White, of Bentinck Court, wrote: “The majority of local residents who originally signed the petition a few years ago are still very much of the mind that this planning application, if it goes ahead, as it stands, it will cause significant short term and long term issues on Sparken Hill, based predominantly around road safety, increased traffic, and congested access up and down the road.”

An ojection to the proposed plan was also filed to Bassetlaw Council on the 23rd September 2014 by another worried resident on the street.

In a letter published on the Bassetlaw Council website, Steve Allsopp wrote: “I have long been concerned with traffic and road safety issues.”

“I am amazed now to see that a further 90 homes are planned using a layout plan with an additional access onto Sparken Hill extremely close to two recently established accesses. I can see no logic to this.”

A spokesman for Bassetlaw Council said: “We have received a Reserved Matters application for a residential development at the former Portland School, Following detailed consideration it is likely to go to planning committee in the new year.”
