A new modern Post Office could be set to open in Worksop town centre as part of a ‘major investment programme’, the Guardian understands.

The proposed location for the branch is Unit 1, 3-5 Newcastle Avenue, directly opposite its current site at 6-8 Newcastle Avenue.

Residents are now being urged to have their say on the plans.

Simon Drinkwater, area manager, said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Worksop and we are confident that this new modern service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”

As part of the plans to modernise the network and extend the service hours for customers, the new store would have three serving positions, a mixture of two new style open-plan counters and one secure fortress position. The same wide-range of existing services would remain on offer.

The Guardian understands that opening hours will be increased to 51 hours a week and a car tax service would be part of the services.

Should the move go ahead, the branch itself would be open from 9.00-17.30, Monday to Saturday. This would offer an extra two-and-a-half hours of Post Office service every Saturday afternoon.

Residents can give feedback until on the blueprints until 31st July before a final decision is made.

Mr Drinkwater added: “This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

Bassetlaw Council leader, Simon Greaves, tweeted: “Good to see proposals for a new post office for Worksop town centre being announced by The Post Office... Well over due!”
