Crowds of excited ‘Directioners’ descended on the Savoy Cinema in Bridge Street on the opening weekend of One Direction: This Is Us 3D.

And staff at the cinema said screens were packed out as fans flocked to see their five favourite lads on the big screen.

The 3D film follows Louis, Harry, Zayn, Niall and Liam on the road during their rise to worldwide fame.

Dazzling concert footage proves they can all sing, but it’s more than a music video.

They are shown as ordinary people, now living extraordinary lives after appearing on The X Factor.

Predictions are that the movie will be a box office smash, having already topped both UK and US box office charts after its opening weekend.

“We held a preview screening on Thursday for movie-goers who just wanted an excusive peek at the film,” said Savoy manager Wayne Gregory.

“Screenings across the weekend were also busy, but not as packed as we had expected.”

Wayne said the atmosphere in the cinema was ‘full of excitement’ with fans wearing One Direction merchandise and posing for pictures next to the promotional posters.

And the cinema manager has his very own claim to fame, having worked with band member Louis Tomlinson before he was famous.

“Louis worked as a general assistant at a cinema in Doncaster where I was manager,” said Wayne, 38.

The 21-year-old pop star from Bessacarr in Doncaster would carry out duties like selling popcorn, cleaning cinema screens and manning the box office.

“We all shared in his excitement as he auditioned for X Factor and got through to the live shows.”

“Louis is such a genuine, down to earth lad. All the way through the TV shows he kept in touch with his colleagues at the cinema.”

“I’m really proud of what he has achieved. Singing is what he always wanted to do, and he is living his dream.”
