Worksop: Petition to stop people who move near live music venues complaining about noise gets 40,000 signatures

Aidan Stevens, who used to live in the town, has set-up a UK Government e-petition - and it has nearly 40,000 signatures within a month.

The 25-year-old and his wife, Natasha, now in London and are in a band themselves called You The Living.

The petition states: “There are innumerate cases of people knowingly moving within close proximity of live music venues, only to try to have their licenses revoked or have them closed completely when they take exception to the noise.”

“Anyone who wishes to buy or rent a property within a determined distance of a music venue should have to read and sign legislature that waives their right to complain about the noise from the nearby venue.”

“If they do not wish to be bothered by something that was a fixture of the community long before they arrived, they should not move there in the first place.”

Aidan told the Guardian the idea for the petition came when he was trying to book a venue but he noticed that a lot of them had closed down.

“I wondered what I could do to stop this happening,” he said. “Within a day, the signatures were going up really quickly.”

The petition, which has had over 39,900 signatures since it was set-up in November is open until March 2015.

It needs 100,000 signatures for it to be debated in the House of Commons.
