Bassetlaw MP John Mann said: “This proposal would be a huge disappointment for the people of Worksop and for the future of the town centre.

“The presence of M&S in the town is highly valued.

“I hope that if it does go ahead steps are taken to ensure that no-one will be out of work as a result.”

Chairman of Worksop Business Forum, Philip Jackson, said: “The proposal to close M&S is very disappointing.

“I am increasingly concerned about the amount of town centre shops which are becoming vacant.

“I think it’s time we all take a look at our shopping habits. Without enough customers shops won’t be able to afford to cover running costs.

“We as a forum continue working hard to encourage business to come to Worksop and also to encourage shoppers to spend their money in our great market town.”

David Armiger, director of regeneration and neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “The loss of another big high street name from Worksop town centre would be devastating and also comes as extremely disappointing news for M&S customers who live in Worksop and the surrounding area.

“We will continue to work extremely hard with the Priory Centre and the Worksop Business Forum to attract a suitable retailer to fill the vacancy that could be left by M&S.”
