Worksop: Potholes on Kingston Road and Valley Road are a mystery

Kingston Road and Valley Road in Worksop have suffered with potholes since earlier in the year.

A Guardian reader got in touch voicing their concerns and said: “What has caused the hole at the top of Kingston Road that is getting bigger, according to my taxi driver?

“It is surrounded by cones at the moment. There is also another one about somewhere.”

“We had one or more on Valley Road last year also that just fell in and do not appear to be drains.”

“With all this shale oil and gas propaganda going on wonder if there is a connection?”

It is thought there is no connection to the shale oil and gas propaganda but it could be something to do with Severn Trent Water and water leaking under the road.

Notts County Councillor Kevin Greaves said: “ We noticed the potholes on Kingston Road and Valley Road earlier in the year and the council have been carrying out investigations but we haven’t been able to get to the bottom of it yet. We don’t know what has caused them and it is a bit of a mystery.”

“All of the tests we have carried out so far have come back inconclusive.”

“We think on Valley Road that it could have something to do with Severn Trent Water and maybe water leaked causing parts of the road to collapse and caused the voids in the road.”

“ Having said this, Kingston Road is still a complete mystery to us and we will continue to investigate the matter until we get to the bottom of it.”

Mr Greaves said the council are keeping the potholes under constant supervision whilst further investigations are being carried out by them and Severn Trent Water.

The council have been out several times to Kingston Road and Valley Road to back fill the potholes, but over time they keep on appearing.

Potholes can be caused when the pavement collapses because of water in the underlying soil structure and the presence of traffic passing over the affected area weakens the road, causing voids and holes.
