Worksop: Proposed plans for new bus station unveiled to the public

The design team were on hand to talk the public though the artists impressions on show at the Civic Centre in Worksop

Work to the site is due to officially begin on Monday 15th September, when the contractor Wates take possession of the land which is phase three of the project.

The proposed plans shown, included a new bus terminal with an eight bus capacity and a cafe on Newcastle Street.

Seven toilets are also going to be in the bus station and include a baby changing unit and disabled toilets.

Instead of paper bus timetables, digital screens will be fitted showing arrivals and departures.

Notts County Councillor Kevin Greaves said: “ What people will see in a few days is big hoarding going up to secure the site and buildings such as the old florist will start being demolished.”

He added that within three weeks, the old NHS building will come down and Stagecoach have said it could be used as a rest area for the drivers.

Mr Greaves said: “The new bus station will hopefully improve footfall into the town.”

It is hoped there will be new buses to go with the station.

Project manager Paul Horne said: “ We are trying to model this on the new bus station in Mansfield. When I think about building these things I think about what would be safe for my son, my mother and my wife.”

“We want to get the bus station right for the people of Worksop and we are listening to all the feedback we get off residents, to try and make it right for them.

“We take a lot of pride in what we build.”

By Christmas the steel frameworks of the bus station will be put into place and the whole project is due to be completed by summer 2015.

It is hoped the number of people using buses in Worksop will increase.

Phase one and two has already been completed earlier in the year.

During some of the work, a one way system in place from Newcastle Street to Watson Road.

The builders will be on site daily from 7am until 6pm.
