Worksop: Public invited to attend unveiling of plans for new bus station

The county council has recently appointed Wates Construction as the main contractor.

Jointly hosted by the contractor and the council, the information event will take place at Civic Square near the Savoy Cinema from 8am until 2pm.

Current proposals outline plans for a new bus terminal with an eight-bus capacity, a waiting concourse and a café and shop on Newcastle Street.

The council’s design team will be on hand to talk about the project along with representatives from West Nottingham College, who will join Wates in informing the public on the training and apprenticeship opportunities available.

Children aged between five and 16 years are also invited to take part in an art competition to design the hoardings that will surround the site.

Coun Alan Rhodes, leader of Notts County Council, said: “I encourage local people to come and have a look at the exciting designs of the new bus station and find out more about our plans.”

“The town has waited a long time for a bus station that is fit for purpose and an attractive place for bus passengers to use so it is great that work is due to start on the building project shortly.”

Richard Scarrott, operations director, Wates Construction, said: “Worksop Bus Station is an important development for local people and as such we share a keenness with Notts County Council to make sure that the community is involved throughout the build. The information day is an open event and will not only inform the public of the plans but will give them the chance to really get involved in our work.”

Head of empa, Alan Coole, said: “Worksop Bus Station is a brilliant example of the benefits of collaborative procurement. The town is very much in need of an upgraded and more efficient bus termini and this project is set to deliver just that, within budget and in a strict time frame.”

The event follows a Meet the Buyer event held by Wates and Notts County Council to invite local sub-contractor and suppliers to tender for the chance to become part of the project supply chain.

The project was procured through the empa framework, managed by Scape, which was established in 2008 by local authorities to improve the delivery of property services to local communities.
