Worksop Remploy factory threatened with closure

A Worksop factory for disabled workers has been threatened with closure as part of Government funding cuts.

The Remploy factory, which employs seven people including five disabled employees, is one of 36 factories nationally that has been proposed for closure.

The Worksop employees, who produce high quality wooden products, are awaiting further news on the closure as Remploy consults with management forums and trade unions.

TUC Midlands general secretary Rob Johnston said the Government’s funding cuts were a ‘disgrace’ and should be immediately withdrawn.

“The decision to close the Worksop Remploy facility with the loss of seven jobs – five of which are for disabled people – is an attack on some of the most vulnerable people in our society,” he said.

Remploy which provides employment for people with disabilities is looking to close 36 of its 54 factories which would result in 1,752 potential redundancies nationally.

The Government proposes to reduce funding to Remploy over the next year with a view to funding other schemes that would be used to support more disabled people into mainstream employment.
