Worksop & Retford: Pupils set for a journey of discovery with science week at Worksop College and Ranby House

Also open to local primary schools, this will be an opportunity for pupils to see theory put into practice with a variety of presentations as well as an exciting array of whizz, bangs and controlled explosions.

Representatives from the National Space Academy will be giving presentations to chemistry and physics students, whilst the younger pupils will enjoy learning all about the solar system in the Star Dome Planetarium.

In addition, by taking up the challenge of bridge building in the sports hall, the pupils will learn how important physics theories are in creating every day constructions.

“The idea behind science week is to enthuse children from aged five to 18 in their studies of this subject,” said Sarah Dalby, head of science at Worksop College.

“There are so many different fields of science in terms of job opportunities.”

“But young people often only have the basic notion of the three subjects, biology, chemistry and physics.”

“By undertaking the activities available during the week the students will get a little taster of a few of the exciting, every day applications of science in the real world, including space and engineering.”

In all, 21 different science sessions will take place across both the Worksop College and Ranby House sites, covering seven different topics.
