Worksop scouts’ joyous Jamboree trip

Robert Gray, 15, and Callum Shutt, 14, joined 38 scouts from across Notts and 38,000 others from all over the world at the huge gathering.

The two week long World Scout Jamboree is held in a different location every four years and possibly the most international event on earth.

Activity modules were based on global development, quests, people and the environment.

A key element was using the natural environment as a learning tool - demonstrating its vulnerability and what people can do to protect the world they live in.

Callum, of 4th Worksop scout group said: “The Jamboree is the best thing I have ever done.”

“It really was an amazing thing to be part of. I have met people from all over the world.”

“I’ve eaten foods I didn’t even know existed and I’ve partied with 38,000 people.”

The spectacular opening ceremony saw the scouts parade in a carnival procession into to a huge open air arena.

There was singing and dancing and the Notts Unit - wearing their Robin Hood caps - even flew the new Notts Flag.

UK Chief Scout and TV star Bear Grylls also dropped in, much to the crowds’ surprise.

He abseiled from the roof of the giant stage to the Mission Impossible theme as thousands of youngsters cheered.

Robert, of 4th Worksop St Anne’s group said: “It was a real honour to represent Worksop and the UK at the Jamboree.”

“I really enjoyed camping out by the lake too, under a sky of shooting stars. I will remember the Jamboree for ever.”

Callum and Robert spent some time at a special campsite situated in the forest where they got to know the Swedish environment.
