Worksop: Shoppers call for major retailer Primark to open a store in town

Residents have told Bassetlaw council that a high street store like Primark would give the area a lift and help attract other big businesses.

David Armiger, director of regeneration and neighbourhoods at the council, said: “Primark is a name that always crops up as the type of shop people would like to see in Worksop and has been mentioned again in our latest consultation on the town centres.”

“We would like to see a wider range of shops on our high streets and our regeneration and investment team is available to work with any prospective retailers or their agents.”

Bassetlaw Council held the consultation on Saturday 14th March at the Town Hall in Worksop.

Shoppers in favour of Primark coming to the town posted messages on the Guardian’s Facebook page.

Denise Winton wrote: “It would keep shoppers local meaning more trade and people coming into Worksop to shop.”

Samantha Taylor posted: “Primark would be good in Worksop. Everyone practically goes to Meadowhall or Doncaster just to go to Primark.”

Although not everyone was of the same opinion. Tim French wrote: “One shop will not create miracles, We need a variety of different amenities whether it be shops or recreational outlets.”

The British Retail Consortium said major retailers like Primark are ‘anchor stores’ and help to pull in other big names but said they are ‘not essential’.

A spokeswoman for M&Co, a ladies clothing store on Bridge Place, said: “It would be competition for us, but we sell a middle brand range, It would probably be better than having a lot of empty units though.”

A spokesman for Cockney Rebel, Bridge Place, said: “I would like to see premium retailers come to Worksop and not the cheaper end.”

Primark refused to comment on speculation on location of stores or the criteria they look for.
