Worksop: Soldier’s medal to be sold at auction
T.R. Knights was given the award after admirers from his town had a collection for him following his return from the Second Boer War where he served from 1899 to 1902.
The medal is now being held at Lockdales, the auctioneers in Martlesham, near Ipswich where it will be sold off.

The medal will go under the hammer on Friday 25th January and it has a catalogue guide price of between £70 and £80.
Auction Manager, James Sadler, said: “This Worksop hero would have been given his campaign and defence medals earlier.”
“This would have been a big bonus.”
“After the Boer War in particular, communities sometimes got together to present servicemen with what became known as the Tribute Medals.”
“We’ve never had one to auction before.”
“So this is a real first for us.”
“These bits of Boer War memorabilia are few and far between, although they have come to light in Norfolk more than other counties.”

The Second Boer War was between the British Empire and the Afrikaans-speaking settlers of two independent Boer republics, the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic) and the Orange Free State.
It ended with a British victory and the annexation of both republics by the British Empire.
