Worksop: Solway Foods factory jobs ‘at risk’

A reader, who did not wish to be identified, contacted the Guardian claiming that part-time workers based at the factory could lose their jobs due to possible ‘financial difficulties’.

They said: “The jobs in question are mainly part-time quality assurance personnel.”

“Quality assurance is a vital part of the food industry, especially in recent times where the issue of food safety and standards have been a national issue.”

“There is speculation that the company is not doing too well.”

“Only recently, it announced the closure of Worksop’s sister plant in Corby with the loss of nine-hundred jobs.”

“However, it is hoped that some of these jobs may be saved by a company willing to buy the plant.”

“Some Worksop employees feel it’s only a matter of time before this plant will close.”

A spokesperson for 2 Sisters Food Group, of which Solway Foods is part of, said there would be a consultation but did not reveal whether jobs were at risk or not.

They said: “Solway Foods confirms that its current contract to supply sandwiches for a customer will be brought to a close by the end of October 2014.”

“Solway Foods is reviewing the impact of this on its business and is entering into a period of consultation with affected colleagues and their elected representatives.”

Solway Foods Worksop Factory is based at Manton Wood business park on Retford Road.

The 2 Sisters group is one of the UK’s largest food manufacturers, supplying chilled products like chilled ready meals, pizzas, soups, sandwiches and salads to customers including Tesco and Costa.
