Students from North Notts College are attempting to set a world record for the tallest Christmas tree made out of bricks.

Nine construction learners have spent the past six weeks building the 5,000-brick tree and invited Bassetlaw MP John Mann along to the college to officially verify the final height of their masterpiece.

Having measured the structure at three metres and 988mm, the information will now be submitted to Guinness World Records in the hope that the record will be officially recognised.

NNC Construction Tutor, Martin Lane, said: “We have built a brick Christmas tree in the past and decided this year to see if we could go for a world record.”

“We are waiting to hear if there is already a category for this and an existing record holder.”

“If they come back and say that it needs to be higher, we won’t be disheartened – we’ll just go for an even taller one next year.”

“Going for the world record has given the learners a real incentive to work on planning the challenging structure and managing the health and safety issues, but the results are amazing.”

“The tree will be decorated with a thousand tea lights, each one dedicated by a students or member of staff to the memory of someone close to them, for a special carol service in the last week of term.”

Bassetlaw MP, John Mann, added: “I look forward to the confirmation of the world record.”

“This work is part of the learners’ work related skills which will be crucial to job creation in the local area.”

“I hope this will encourage more people to come and enrol in bricklaying at the college.”
