Notts Police were called to Kipling Close, Kilton, on Monday at 6.30pm.

People in the streets nearby said the police had been knocking on doors to aid their enquiries.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “I saw a police car parked at the end of the road on Monday and later on I found out why.”

“It’s devastating for the family.”

“I don’t think it’s helpful for people to be stood in the street talking about what might or might not have happened.”

Staff at local shops in Kilton said the close knit community was pulling together as best they could.

One shop owner said: “People are talking about it but it’s not really fair to speculate.”

“I remember when a little girl from St Augustine’s died a few years ago and it devastated the community.”

“It’s tragic and we are all thinking of the family.”

Another shop worker said: “It’s tragic. She was so young.”

“She had her whole life ahead of her.”

Coun Griff Wynne, ward member for Worksop East, said: “The death of any child is a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”

Carol Pattinson, group manager at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We were saddened to hear about this tragic death and our thoughts are with the family at this time. Support has been offered to the family.”

Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding her death.
