Worksop: Two more courageous security guards praised by police for trying to save life of shopper

Yesterday the Guardian broke the news that Priory Shopping Centre security guard Calum Cooper had been awarded a Divisional Commander Commendation by Notts Police.

We can now reveal that two more town security guards - David Grout and Darrell Crowder - will also be awarded the top accolade by police chiefs.

Chief Superintendent Mark Holland congratulated the trio in a letter for their quick-thinking in a tragic incident that took place in 2014.

A female customer called for help after her friend fell ill on a barge behind the shopping centre.

On arrival at the scene, Calum, David and Darrell quickly started CPR until paramedics arrived.

Despite the team’s best efforts, the man tragically passed away due to a heart attack.

In recognition of their efforts, the three men will be presented with the special gong during the divisional awards evening on 22nd April.

David Grout, security guard at Iceland, said: “You don’t expect to go to work and have to try to save a man’s life. I was a bit shocked afterwards.”

Former Priory security guard, Darrell Crowder said: “I am looking forward to receiving the award. I am very pleased that we are getting recognition. We tried our very best.”

Priory Centre manager, David Aunins, said: “Calum has shown bravery in the face of adversity.”

“Despite the tragic circumstances, it’s a proud moment for us all at the centre and it’s great to see Calum receive the recognition he deserves”.
