Isabel Day was just 17 weeks old when she underwent a full heart repair at Leeds congenital heart unit, after she was born with tetralogy of fallot and double outlet right ventricle.

Now the family of Isabel, who will be due further heart surgery in future, is urging people to come together for Wear Red Day, an initiative run by regional charity Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, which supports the unit based at Leeds General Infirmary.

More than 200 schools and businesses across the Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire region will raise awareness for the charity during the event, on Friday, February 5, by wearing red.

Natalie Day, Isabel’s mum, said: “It’s terrifying to see your child go through such invasive surgery at such a young age.

“However, our experience was made as bearable as possible by the staff at ward 51 and all of the team members of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, who provided endless support.

“We’re keen to do all we can to support Wear Red Day, and help drive awareness of such a deserving cause to help other families going through anything similar to what we have been through with Isabel.

Last year, £48,000 was raised thanks to the support of schools, businesses and the general public donating online and by text during the day.

In 2016, the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s focus is to support the costly new standards created by NHS England, which are now being implemented across the UK.
