Would you walk just one mile for them?

DINNINGTON Royal British Legion is organising a charity walk to help raise money to support injured servicemen and women.

The Dinnington branch of the legion is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and is keen to mark the occasion by raising as much as possible to support our troops.

The legion is probably best known throughout the UK for its annual Poppy Appeal every year in the run up to Remembrance Sunday.

But many people don’t realise that the charity needs to raise funds throughout the year to support our serving and ex-service members and their families.

It has recently made a commitment to provide £50 million in funding over the next 10 years to fund Personnel Recovery Centres and a new Legion Battle Back Centre helping injured soldiers to return to an active life.

So the chairman and members of the Dinnington and District branch are inviting all the schools in the local area to take part in a sponsored walk to raise funds.

David Williams from the Dinnington branch said: “Our target is to raise at least £9,000 by walking a total of 900 miles sponsored at £10 per mile.”

“Individuals are not limited to walking one mile and can opt to walk more if they wish.”

“For the younger children, a group of 10 could maybe walk 176 yards or a group of five walk 352 yards.”

“We are planning to have the walk during the mid-term break on 29th October starting at 12pm until 4pm.”

The legion has measured out three routes around Dinnington measuring one, three and five miles, which all start and finish at the Ukraine Club on Barleycroft Lane.

“Of course, should you wish to conduct your walk within wyour own school grounds, then that is perfectly acceptable,” continued David.

“The Dinnington branch will provide safety marshals for the walk.”

“We would also welcome the opportunity to address pupils at a morning assembly to explain the role of the Legion and the plans for the Dinnington 900 Walk.”

Any schools interested in taking part in the walk should contact the legion as soon as possible so that groupings and timings can be arranged for each of the walks.
