Youngsters go to the polls!

Students from Gateford Park Primary School had their first taste of democracy when they went to the ballot box last month.

New headteacher Gareth Letton asked students and staff to vote on their favourite category, from which each class would take a new name.

The school council which is made up of student representatives from Year 1 to 6 narrowed suggestions down to a shortlist of five categories: precious stones; mythical creatures; local areas; commonwealth countries and birds.

Year One teacher Stephanie Robinson said the election was a great success and the children really enjoyed taking part.

“We took the opportunity to teach the children about the importance of democracy and how you need to consider all of the options before voting,” she said.

“The children enjoyed voting so much we’re hoping to have elections to make other school decisions.”

Students were involved with every step of the voting process from checking off names to counting the votes.

Staff members and pupils voted using ballot boxes borrowed from Notts County Council and mythical creatures were chosen as the schools favourite category for class names.

Gnomes, pixies and giants were some of the mythical creatures selected by the Student Council to be used as class names.
