The 100-year-old Army Veteran became well-known and loved during the early months of the Covid pandemic, when he raised almost £33million for NHS charities by walking 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden before his birthday.

However, his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore has now spoken about the “trolling” he received over the past year.

‘It would have broken his heart’

The veteran received a wave of online abuse prior to his death on 2 February from Covid-19 - something which Ms Ingram-Moore hid from her father.

Ms Ingram-Moore told BBC Breakfast that her family used their “resilience” against the online trolling, but that she “couldn't tell” her father as he wouldn’t ever have understood it.”

She said: "I think it would have broken his heart, honestly, if we'd said to him people are hating us.

"Because how do you rationalise to a 100-year-old man that something so incredibly good can attract such horror? So we contained it within the four of us and we said we wouldn’t play to ... that vile minority, we wouldn’t play to them.”

Before his death, Captain Tom holidayed in Barbados with his family in December, something which he’d always wanted to do, but which he was also later trolled for.

Addressing their time in the Caribbean, Ms Ingram-Moore said her Captain Tom “sat in 29 degrees outside, he read two novels, he read the newspapers every day, and we sat and we talked as a family, we went to restaurants, because we could there, and he ate fish on the beach and what a wonderful thing to do.”

“I think we were all so pleased we managed to give him that,” she added.
