Admittedly it's not everyone who keeps the slice of leftover wedding cake that's often distributed after the reception.

Many of us will have scoffed it next morning as an antidote to the excess champagne consumed at the reception.

However, when it's in a presentation box, it's just too nice to consume. Especially if the card with it is stamped with the Royal crest.

And even those of us who didn't somehow wangle an invite to the nuptials of William and Kate, or Andrew and Fergie, or even, um, the cherry on the cake of Charles and Diana, can get a slice of royalty now that cake from numerous weddings has come up for auction.

Five cakes slices from the most iconic royal weddings of the past 50 years will be going under the hammer.

Piece of cake

A six-year old piece from the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is expected to sell for £500.

The slice of fruitcake, made by Fiona Cairns, is contained within a presentation tin that was given to guests and dignitaries at the April 29, 2011, wedding.

It is accompanied by an enclosure card that reads, “With best wishes/ from/TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall/ in celebration of the wedding/ of/ TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.”

A slice of cake from the legendary royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana on July 29, 1981 is also available.

The cake contained in a white box with silver printing that reads “CD/ Buckingham Palace/ 29th July 1981” and wrapped in a paper doily comes with an original transmittal envelope to “Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Waite” with Queen Elizabeth’s royal stamp. The piece is estimated to sell for £800.

Tasty earner

Julien’s Auctions will be auctioning the cake slices off on June 23 at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas and online at juliensauctions.com.

Other highlights include a royal wedding cake slice from the marriage of Prince Charlesto Camilla on April 9, 2005 (estimate of £500), a slice of cake from the marriage of Prince Andrew to Sarah Ferguson held at Buckingham Palace on July 23, 1986 (estimate of £500).

A slice of royal wedding cake from the marriage of Princess Anne to Captain Mark Phillips on November 14, 1973 (estimate of £300).

Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien’s Auctions, said: "Very few are invited to a royal wedding and having a slice of cake that was only given out to invited guests is the closest most could ever get.

"Anything associated with the royal family is highly collectable and sought after."

So, if you weren't there, now's the chance to relive the big day. But if you were... have a dig through the larder.
