Here's how to reveal a hidden animated painting in the new £20 note using Snapchat

If you manage to get hold of the new £20 note, you can use Snapchat to reveal an animated painting hidden in it.

The popular picture and video-sharing app has turned the polymer note into an animated artwork featuring the paintings of JMW Turner - the artist featured on the reverse of the new notes.

The £20 note went into circulation on 20 February 2020 and features a self-portrait of the esteemed English artist alongside The Fighting Temeraire, one of Turner's most celebrated works.

Turner was a landscape painter renowned for his paintings of the English countryside. He was chosen for the note due to his enduring cultural legacy in the UK.

The Snapchat filter will allow users to see The Fighting Temeraire animated and in full colour. It works much like other Snapchat filters by using the camera to identify the note then add interactive images and sound effects on top.

All you have to do is download and open the app, (if you don't already have it) press and hold the Snapcode to unlock the filter, then hover over the £20 to see the animation.

If you can't get your hands on the new £20 note, you can view it on display in the National Gallery in London and use the filter there. Alternatively, an image of the note will also allow you to use the filter.

The Bank of England hasn't yet announced when the old paper £20 notes will be withdrawn from circulation, but until they are, you can continue to use both notes interchangeably.

At least six months' notice will be given before the notes are withdrawn, to give the public a chance to get rid of any old notes. The best way to do this is to pay them into your bank account.

The £50 note is also getting a redesign, and will be released into circulation from 2021.
