Whether baking is something you do every week, or an occasional hobby you enjoy - perhaps with your children or grandchildren - these stand mixers could take the hard work out of cakes, breads and more.

Whether you're attempting your first homemade loaf, perfecting your brownie recipe or fully embracing your latest baking obsession, a good stand mixer can completely change the way you cook. In fact, it can be one of those kitchen appliances that quickly goes from “nice to have” to “how did I cope without this?”

A stand mixer handles the heavy baking work for you, in turn giving more consistent results and freeing up time to focus on the fun parts; decorating, experimenting with flavours and, of course, eating the finished result.

The biggest things worth considering before you make your purchase are motor power, bowl capacity, kitchen space, and whether you want serious baking performance or stylish everyday convenience. We’ve looked at all of these factors and made pick of some of the best on the market right now. Keep reading to find out more.

Best for smaller spaces - but big capacity

Kenwood Go Collection stand mixer

Kenwood Go Collection stand mixer | Kenwood

The Kenwood Go Stand Mixer is a sleek, compact option ideal for home bakers who need performance in small spaces. We were impressed by powerful mixing capability of this machine despite the small frame, coupled with the excellent bowl capacity for everyday baking, and overall stylish design that fits neatly on any countertop.

The new eucalyptus version has a softer, trend-led look that feels more design-focused - but the substance behind the machine isn’t sacrificed for its stye - though we love how sleek it looks on our counter top.

The 4L bowl still handles everyday baking jobs comfortably, even the big ones. We have made two batches of cookie dough in it at once, giving us enough for 24 medium sized cookies. It’s possibly bigger than you’d think, and it can withstand long baking sessions.

The mixer stands at under 30cm high, making it easy to store it cupboards or even deep pan drawer, but when it looks this good we don’t think you’ll want to. But, the fact it can fit in cupboards is fantastic for an item that is usually associated with being big and bulky.

If you’ve let space stop you from getting a stand mixer in the past or you’re a regular baker, then the Kenwood Go Stand Mixer is for you. The mixer is also available in clay red and blue.

Best for budgets - but a well-known brand

Salter British Bakes Stand Mixer

Salter British Bakes Stand Mixer | Salter

The Salter British Bakes Stand Mixer is an attractive and affordable option for home bakers seeking reliable performance without the high-end price tag. We found it still provides solid mixing power, but it looks super stylish and is very easy to use. Alongside its effective performance, we love that this also has colourful retro styling. We chose the pink version, but it’s also available in yellow and green.

Despite its low price point, the Salter British Bakes mixer is delivers some surprisingly generous features; a 1,300W motor, a 5L bowl, 10 speed settings and the key accessories most home bakers need including a whisk, dough hook and beater attachments.

It is a little noisy when on the higher speed settings, but lots of kitchen appliances are quite loud when in use so this isn’t a big issue. We think the most important thing is performance, and this certainly delivers. Plus, it’s certainly one of the cheapest models with a 5L capacity - but it’s the only one we have seen around this price point from a reputable name.

If you are a casual baker so you don’t want to spend a lot of money, but you’re fed up of making your favourite bread, cookies and cakes by hand and you still want a quality product, then this is the best choice.

Best for adding personality - from another trusted name

For a mid-priced option, the Russell Hobbs Emma Bridgewater Stand Mixer is for people wanting a balance between cost, capability and look. Not everyone needs a premium machine, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want something that looks attractive and works well.

It has a bold design with Emma Bridgewater's recognisable polka dot styling, making it ideal for anyone who likes their worktop appliances to be unique and stand out. Underneath the playful finish, it's still designed for serious baking too, with a 5L stainless steel bowl, 1,000W motor, 10 speed settings and whisk, beater and dough hook attachments included - but it won’t take over your budget.

For shoppers who want their mixer to double as a statement piece on their kitchen counter, the Russell Hobbs Emma Bridgewater model brings colour and personality alongside top everyday baking performance.
