The sculptures – at the town’s main crossroads – were erected by the society and represent the historic horse fairs held in the town over the centuries, up until 1947.

They were designed by society members and produced by two local companies.

The Horse Fair was established in the 13th century and expanded greatly in the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming the largest in Europe until its demise in the mid-20th century.
