A premier venue

Since opening its doors in 2001 the fishery has rapidly gained a reputation as one the area’s premier venues, boasting 184 pegs on five lakes, and amongst other amenities a purpose built café and toilet block.

Complex owner Bill has worked hard to ensure that there is a variety of species available and there is such a diversity of waters that it offers different opportunities to all coarse anglers be they absolute novices or hardened specimen hunters.

Due to the size of the complex we will be splitting this report over the next two weeks.

The “top pond” is the first lake you will see when entering the complex and is as far away from the typical commercial pond as you could wish to hope for, with random features and configurations.

No two pegs are the same and tactics and methods have to be adapted to suit your chosen swim and target species.

Pegs 1-7 are positioned in an arm off the main lake and offers the opportunities for sheltered fishing, particularly when fishing the waggler in blustery conditions although most methods will see reasonable nets of skimmers with the odd large carp thrown in for good measure.

Pegs 8 and 9 offer the option of a good ‘chuck’ with the feeder or conventional pole tactics, and then you will see a bridge over to the island where there are a couple of pegs which have a reputation for catches of large (dustbin lid) bream.

The pegs 15 to 34 offer sheltered fishing to open water with (in our experience ) good quality skimmers although access could be difficult for any anglers with mobility problems due to the high banks behind the pegs.

The pegs 35 to 38 in the bottom corner of the lake are dominated by an island within easy reach of a pellet waggler or bomb, but these pegs also have the reputation of holding large quality tench which can be taken from more or less the rod tip outwards.

The pegs along the furthermost banks 36 to 46 are the longest walk you will have from your car but are easily accessible and offer great sport.

Again methods will vary dependent on the wind direction and strength due to them being more exposed than the rest of the lake.

COMMERCIAL ROUND-UP

WE start at the aforementioned Lodge Farm where the in-form Jamie Wilde put together a winning weight in Tuesday’s open on the lily pond, casting his method feeder to good effect to land 99lb 2oz off peg 53.

He finished well clear of Dave Evans in second on peg 56 who fished his favoured wagglered meat for 49lb 11oz and Steve Bingham who also fished the method and bagged 45lb 11oz on peg 52.

Wednesday saw the over 50s venture onto the long island with the ever popular Keith Morris claiming victory, bomb fishing meat for 62lb 1oz off peg 88.

Melvin Morris took the runners-up position on peg 92 weighing 47lb 11oz and Mick Gillet was third with 42lb 11oz on peg 87.

Thursday saw the competition move onto both the lily and long island where Jamie Wilde proved his class again winning with 71lb 1oz on peg 53 employing the method feeder.

John Moore claimed second spot weighing 28lb 10oz pole fishing pellet on peg 78 and Dave Evans had to settle for third on peg 52 with a net of 20lb 14oz.

Saturday’s contest on the field pond was won by Gary Mumby who landed 17lb 11oz on peg 5 pole fishing pellet.

Saturday’s open is to be competed on the field pond with a 9am draw in the cafe.

At Lakeside fishing complex the match lake is throwing some fine nets of silver fish in contests with the maggot feeder proving to be effective in bags approaching 40lb.

On the calmer days the wag and mag has been accounting for silver nets upto 38lb 9oz, with bomb and meat worth a cast on any of the pegs with features for the resident carp.

Regular visitors DJ Angling held a knock-up on the second strip pond with Jack Shillitoe amassing a winning net of carp and skimmers together weighing 37llb 5oz off peg 1 pole fishing pellet.

On the carp pond Gary Croft banked three specimens on peg 3 on his multiple maggot ring which included a common of 24lb 11oz, whilst over on the trout pond Ian Helliwell cast his montana fly on a floating line to tempt 12 fish.
