An ode to ‘Blue’

EARLIER this year we lost one of the great characters from the local angling scene – Dave ‘Blue’ Wright.

He was one of the finest match anglers on the circuit and an accomplished all rounder.

Blue was a regular at Lakeside Fishery at Ranskill, and was a series champion.

In Blue’s memory the regulars have put together a poem which in our mind is a fitting tribute.

Ode to Blue: The frosts are upon us the sky is clear, that means one thing, that winter is here. Time to wrap up to keep ourselves warm, a hot cup of tea on this chilly dawn.

Its’ Saturday morning,an eight thirty draw, a dip in the bag and hopefully score.

The vermin’s asleep and no skimmers on meat, because its ground bait and pinkies, that they prefer to eat, the word on the bank is that there’s one man to beat.

Its 10 am and the whistle has gone, time to find to find out who is number one.

He pots in his pudding on more than one line, letting it settle, it should be fine.

A chuck with the feeder, or maybe the bomb , may catch you a bonus fish early on.

After this “last in section” rings out so clear, “ Tha bets that mine are eight to the pound”, to anglers around him a familiar sound.

The whistle has gone it is time to see, if the anglers around him are filled with glee.

“You lying Dinno prat,”is now what you hear, the scales don’t lie is obviously clear, no names mentioned on this little letter, but if you have met this bloke, there was none better, as an angler and friend forever and ever.

With this in mind Blue’s good friend Mick Shaw is organising a memorial match with all proceeds going to the Macmillan Nurses.

The event is at Lakeside Fishery on 4th November with just a few places left at the time of writing.
