Anglers on Voyage

LAST Thursday we had the privilege of helping out at the inaugural ‘Voyage’ fishing competition at Wetlands, near Sutton-cum-Lound.

What made this event so different is that the competitors had either a learning disability or acquired brain injury.

The entrants came from as far afield as Taunton, Burnley and Peterborough as well as a strong local field, and with the weather being especially kind a great day’s fishing was on the cards.

We are happy to say that everyone managed to catch something, with the biggest fish a 9lb 5oz carp falling to local rod Craig Butcher, but the winner with 26lb was Ben Mill.

Ben had travelled all the way from Somerset to compete and was rewarded with a magnificent trophy that had been kindly donated by the family of Worksop angler Ray Mallendar, who sadly passed away recently.

Such was the enthusiasm that next year’s event is already in the planning stages, but it must be mentioned that this could not have happened without the generous donation of the water by the Wetlands team.

Invaluable help was provided by local anglers, particularly the tireless Graham Cashmore and Chris Davenport.
