ATHLETICS: Sleaford Striders out in force at weekend

A busy weekend saw the Sleaford Striders out in force, taking part in round one of the Lincolnshire Track and Field League, as well as the Thorney 10km road race.

Round one of the league took place at Grantham and there were wins for both juniors and seniors in various events.

Ellie Booth won both the under-11 girls’ 80m and 150m sprints as well as the ball throwing and was second Strider in the long jump. Isabel Collier, in the same age group, was second Strider in the 80m, 150m and ball throwing and third in the long jump. Louise Hirst won the girls’ long jump and 600m in this age group as well as achieving a second place in the same time as Isabel Collier in the 80m and also took part in the ball throw.

Lilly Doran was the third Strider in the girls’ 150m and also took part in the long jump and ball throw. Megan Reid was the third Strider girl in the ball throw with a distance of 18.13m. For most of these girls it was the first time they had undertaken some of the events.

The girls’ under-13 saw Holly Aslin win the 100m and 200m. Ella Louise Asbrey won the 70m hurdles as well as the long jump and completed the 1500m in 6.47.6. Shannon Caven achieved a great throw of 4.96m in the girls’ shot put in this age group.

In the girls’ under-15, Erin Disbell won the long jump with a jump of 4.31m and participated in the 100m and shot put. The under-17 girls’ had Ella Owen taking part in the 100m, 200m and shot put. Keeley Caven was close behind Ella in the 200m in a time of 33.5sec. Emily Ashcroft was the sole Strider in the under-20 women’s events with a 31.1sec time in the 200m and a leap of 1.25m in the high jump.

James Hebden won the under-17 boys’ long jump and triple jump as well as achieving a time of 12.3sec in the 100m. Max Aslin took part in the under-13 boys’ 100m and 200m. Ben Bailey ran in the 100m and 800m, as well as the high jump. Josh Doran was first Strider in the 200m and Luke Saunders ran in the 200m and 800m, as well as the high jump.

The adults were also represented at Grantham with Iain Bailey winning the 3,000m, closely followed by Alan Oliver, with Ash Steventon winning the high jump and long jump as well as achieving a distance of 11.5m in the triple jump.

Road running was also on the calendar with the second round of the ever popular Sleaford Striders Specsavers Race Series at Thorney for the 10km.

Chris North finished ninth overall in 36.31, followed by Andy Dickinson 45.23, Alan Buckberry 49.23, Hannah North 51.50, Ian Starbuck 52.57, Tracey Dickinson 58.53, Rachel Lear 59.06, Debbie Priestley 61.16 and Carol Dudley 70.46.
