He took part in the triathlon which comprises the hammer, shot and heavyweight hammer. Things started well with a personal best in the hammer (21.81m), and Jim followed that with an effort in the shot of 8.76m, his best outdoor throw this year.

Finally, up came the heavyweight hammer which last weekend saw Jim break his national record with 9.33m – and he managed to break it again with an effort of 9.37m.

And Jim’s final points tally was 1,205 which was also a national record, beating the score he set in January (1112 points).

Jim said both he and his son Kieran had enjoyed a fantastic winter season, setting personal bests in just about every event they have taken part in.

Jim said: “We’ve put the work in and reaped the rewards which is very satisfying. It just goes to show that even if you are in your 50s you can still improve your strength and fitness, setting lifetime bests to boot.

“We now turn to the upcoming summer season, and to be honest, can’t wait for it to start.”
