But the day did not start well for Jim, with his first two throws in the hammer being no-throws due to landing outside the throwing sector.

With only one chance remaining to get a score, he manaaged to get one in, and just below his personal best.

The second event was the shot-put in which Jim achieved 8.72 metres, which was his best outdoor throw this year.

Discus was up next and a throw of 26.10 metres was pleasing to Jim. The fourth event was the javelin which he said “went OK”.

But in the final event, the heavyweight hammer, Jim broke his national record with 8.64 metres, an improvement of 16cm. And his final points score of 1,723 was a personal best by more than 60 points.

Jim said: “I’m really pleased with these performances because this was an outdoor competition and it was absolutely freezing, which does affect your performance.

“I’m looking forward to some warmer weather which should see an improvement in these distances.”
