ATHLETICS: Wragby's Jim wins throws triathlon masters

Wragby athlete Jim Gillespie competed in the Invitational Throws Triathlon at Swindon on Saturday.

The competition comprised of the hammer, shot-put and heavyweight hammer – and Jim won it with 971 points which is an Irish masters record.

He began very well, throwing 20.32 metres in the hammer, a personal best, followed by 8.68 metres in the shot with which he was a bit disappointed.

But then he threw 8.48 metres in the heavyweight hammer, which was not only a personal best by nearly two metres, but broke his own national record which previously stood at 6.69 metres.

Jim said: “These sort of performances are why you put the hours of work into the gym, shifting weights and honing your fitness, it makes it all worthwhile. To say I’m really chuffed is a major understatement.

“We are still in the middle of winter, so I haven’t really started speeding my training up yet, therefore there’s still plenty to come one would assume.”

Jim will be in action again at the weekend when he and his son Kieran take part in the third Loughborough indoor event.
