BADAC cross-country aces show improvement

Young runners at the latest in the 2015-16 series of Boston & District AC Cross Country matches clearly illustrated the progress made by the regular competitors over recent months.

Under 15 Alex Riches improved his performance over the 2,100m Punchbowl Lane course at The B-Hive, showing good front running and a much better pace overall.

Despite the soggy underfoot conditions, Alex finished strongly and recorded 9 mins 19 secs at the end.

In the year five and six event over the same distance, Lucy Raywood produced an impressive performance, dominating fom the start and maintaining good form throughout to win in a promising 10 mins 38 secs.

Hallam Bedford also ran well to follow Lucy into the finish and record 11 mins 21 secs.

The race for year five and six competitors increased in distance, moving up to the three-lap 2.1K course, with Haddley Bedford looking assured out in front, achieving a convincing victory and recording 11 mins 28 secs.

Matthew Lewis claimed second place in 12 mins 01 secs and just edged out an improving Leo Pool, who clocked 12 mins 06 secs in third place.

First girl in the age group Alice Frick showed good rhythm over the humps and bumps around the course to record 12 mins 30 secs in fourth place, ahead of Ella Taylor (St George’s School), who showed great determination over the longer distance to claim fifth position.

In the year three and four race over 1,300m, Jessica Frick was never headed.

Setting off strongly from the gun, Jessica made light of the conditions to achieve a comfortable victory, finishing in 7 mins 18 secs.

A much-improved Rhys Boswell came home in second position, clocking 7 mins 48 secs with James Leates in third place, recording 8 mins 05 secs.

The year one and two race was hotly contested, with runners setting a swift pace from the start.

Just five seconds separated the first three competitors at the end of the 700m challenge with Ben Rudkin (St George’s & BADAC) in the lead entering the funnel to record 3 mins 07 secs.

Runner-up and three seconds behind was St George’s Joshua Watts (3 mins 10 secs) with teammate Toby Taylor third in 3 mins 12 secs ahead of Coco Louizo in fourth place.

The next event for juniors at The B-Hive Athletics Training Centre is the sportshall athletics competition for under seven, under nines, under 11 and under 13 boys and girls on Saturday, February 6 with the next in the series of cross country events on February 20.

Both events start at 10am with registration from 9.30am.
