Ballers back on court next week

WORKSOP Basketball Club are back in training on Tuesday 4th September at Portland Academy.

The sessions will run from 7pm to 8.30pm, and players of all abilities are welcome from the age of 14 upwards.

The club has just enjoyed its best season to date with success on the court in the form of the Division Two title as well as seeing a surge in membership, with record numbers attending training sessions.

To build on this success and interest, the club is entering a B team in the league this year to give some of the less experienced players a chance to gain some competitive action.

An influx of teams to the SBL has seen the competition move to a three division format for the new season, with Worksop A placed in the new Division Two, much to the relief of head coach Steve Lawes.

He said: “As champions, we were due to go up but the record of promoted teams in recent years is demoralising.”

“There is a big gulf between the two leagues with mucher higher levels of athleticism and experience in Division One.”

“So we breathed a huge sigh of relief when invited to be part of the new second division this year.”

“Even so, we know it’s going to be significantly tougher than last year.”

The B team will play in Division Three and will be led by James Penrose who has recently taken his first steps in coaching by leading a Worksop side in the Sheffield Summer League.

“James has always shown a flair for helping the young players develop and we are looking forward to seeing some great progress among the B team players under his guidance” added Lawes.
