Batmen are Calcutta Cup Final winners

THE last competitive game in the Gainsborough and District Table Tennis League season took place last week with Blues Club Phoenix and Methodist Batmen fighting it out in the final of the Calcutta Cup.

All players were competitive, sporting and determined with Man of the Match Tom Lovely of Batmen proving himself by playing before being fully recovered from a broken ankle.

Batmen won by just 37 points and the full result was: Phoenix 336 (Alistair McPherson 122, Ron Simons 109, Dave Shelley 105), Batmen 373 (Ken Eliot 95, Mark Longstaff 116, Tom Lovely 109, plus 53 points handicap).

The league’s presentation event takes place tomorrow (Friday) evening starting at 7.30pm and is now being held at the Cons Club on Heaton Street – not as per handbook.

All attending are requested to donate a tombola prize.

Anyone wishing to start or return to playing table tennis can do so by telephoning Paul Johnson of the Blitz Club on 07986 044680 or the league secretary on 01427 610440.
