Blitz launch new Super League

Gainsborough's Blitz Table Tennis Club launched their brand new initiative The Blitz Super League this week.

Blitz, which was formed in 2009, has a strong desire to promote table tennis in the local community and has formed their Super league to encourage more people to participate in the sport, giving them a chance to compete in a 2 tier league system aimed at all abilities.

The new format comprises of two man teams who play each other at singles matches and finally at doubles.

Matches take place every Monday at the clubs Gainsborough Academy head quarters and the first Mondays matches were a great success with all tables occupied in a full hall.

In Division One the Infernos team of Kurt Hutson and Phil Dixon proved too strong for the Eagles and ran out 5-0 winners to take all three points and set the pace in the league.

Stoic 1 and U Got Served ‘s match got off to an exciting start with Clive Mitchell edging out Steve Johnson 11-6 in the deciding fifth set.

Steve Fox of Stoic won both his matches as well as teaming up with Mitchell to take the doubles and give their team a winning 4-1 start.

Legs Eleven also recorded a 4-1 win in Division One defeating Scorpions. Stand out player was Darija Vasiljevaite winning both her singles matches as well as teaming up with Carl Burlinson to take the doubles.

The Silent Assassins also got off to a winning start with a 3-2 win over Bad News. Paul Johnson winning both his singles as well as the doubles teamed with Amy Gittings.

In Division Two the Blades got off to the perfect start with a 5-0 win over the Jam Jars. Alex Hammond and Matt Taylor proving too strong on the night for the Jam Jars.

The Firecrackers team of Eleanor Chapman and Nathanael Sims recording an impressive 4-1 win over Classy Cas. Sims was undefeated in his matches and Dave Harris collected Classy Cas’s only win of the night.

Super League has got off to a great start and the club hope it will flourish and reinvigorate table tennis in the local community.

New players are always welcome at the club. Coaching takes place every Friday evening as well as a social table tennis session every Thursday evening where all equipment is supplied.
